The methods that shaped Bauhaus of the Seas Sails were as important as the outcomes they produced. This section explains how the project worked, elaborating on the frameworks, structures and typologies that guided its actions from the first Sea Forum to the Final public event. Each of these actions followed a three-part logic that we called Drop, Ripple, Wave. This three-part logic shaped not just how interventions were designed, but how their impact was assessed. The project’s monitoring and evaluation framework, developed by TU Delft, was built around the question: is this a drop, a ripple, or a wave – and what would it take to go further?

A drop is a designed intervention – specific, place-based and co-created with the communities and institutions that will carry it forward. Drops emerge from a process of listening and collective imagination. They take many forms: an artistic residency, a nature-based installation, a regenerative food programme, a participatory storytelling project, an educational workshop. What they share is intentionality – each drop is designed to do something specific in a particular place.

The ripple is what happens when a drop lands. Ripples are the concrete, visible outcomes of an intervention: the reef that marine life begins to inhabit, the recipe that a chef develops and teaches to culinary students, the digital app that geolocates the stories of a coastline, the exhibition that draws a neighbourhood into conversation about its own history and future. Ripples are local. They belong to the places and people that made them.

The wave is the longer horizon. If the conditions are right – if the right institutions are involved, if the community has ownership, if there is funding and political will to continue – a ripple can become a wave: a lasting shift in how a city thinks, plans and acts. A new governance model. A changed curriculum. A policy that embeds more-than-human interests into urban planning.
