Bauhaus of the Seas Sails brought together academic, cultural and territorial partners across multiple European cities and aquatic ecosystems. This page has been restored so the section resolves correctly again in Kirby and on the live site.
The Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI) is one of IST’s over 50 research centres. Founded in 1911, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) is the largest engineering school in number of enrolled students, faculty size, scientific production and patents in the University of Lisboa and in Portugal. ITI is the coordinator of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project and consortium. Its multidisciplinary, international team of researchers and students is since December 2022 based at Hub Criativo do Beato, the district where the Lisbon demonstrator pilots will be developed.
TBA21–Academy is TBA21’s research centre fostering a deeper relationship with the Ocean and other bodies of water through the lens of art to inspire care and action. Established in 2011, the Academy has since worked as an incubator for collaborative inquiry, artistic production, and environmental advocacy, catalysing new forms of knowledge emerging from the exchanges between art, science, policy, and conservation. In 2019, TBA21–Academy opened Ocean Space in Venice, a planetary centre that hosts exhibitions, research, and public activities that accelerate critical ocean literacy through the arts. Building on TBA21–Academy’s expansive work, this embassy for the Ocean fosters engagement and collective action on the most pressing issues facing the Ocean today. Its digital counterpart, Ocean-Archive.org, is a user-based platform in the making, conceived as a framework for collaborative research that brings together the multitude of voices and stories around the Ocean and connects those striving to nurture and protect it. Designed as a storytelling and pedagogical tool, the Archive translates current knowledge about the Ocean into a shared language that enables us to make better decisions for urgently needed policies. Building on previous experience with drop typologies, TBA21–Academy will coordinate the curation of pilots across all Bauhaus of the Seas Sails sites.
Magellan Circle is a private company specialised in EU Affairs and funding, headquartered in Porto and with offices in Genoa and Brussels. It provides international consultancy services related to project management, fund scouting and strategic planning. Magellan Circle is also a beneficiary in several EU funded projects, where it is responsible for communication, dissemination and results exploitation activities. Notable examples include: Pioneers, Steerer, Lash Fire, Docks the Future and Moving Together – Transport Research Arena 2022 Lisbon. Magellan Circle participates in the Communication and Dissemination actions of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails, as well as in supporting the coordinator with project management-related financial and administrative issues.
Established in 1956 as a Portuguese foundation for the whole of humanity, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s original purpose focused on fostering knowledge and raising the quality of life of persons throughout the fields of the arts, charity, science and education. Bequeathed by the last will and testament of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, the Foundation is of perpetual duration and undertakes its activities structured around its headquarters in Lisbon (Portugal) and its delegations in Paris (France) and London (the United Kingdom). The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation participates in the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium mainly as the cultural partner of the Lisbon and Oeiras demonstrator pilots and their respective co-creation processes. This participation will be related to public and exhibition programmes in associated cultural venues. One in Lisbon, curated in collaboration with the Municipality of Lisbon and dedicated to the Beato area, aims to influence the configuration and scope of the Hub Criativo do Beato by making it an inclusive cultural space dedicated to blue research grounded on a sustainable agenda. The other in Oeiras, curated in collaboration with the Municipality of Oeiras, which consists of an art-science residency programme and an intergenerational think-tank that aim to inform the content and educational strategy for the future Tagus Museum.
In its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Lisbon Municipality aims to reconnect its citizens with the river and the sea, while fostering the blue economy as a new urban development goal. As a Bauhaus of the Seas Sails partner, the Lisbon Municipality contributed to the creation of a platform/lab to conduct, research and explore material applications and scenarios in urban environments related to the river Tagus. In addition, it contributed to the design of a food menu beneficial to the river ecosystem. Both projects will influence the programme of a future Blue Hub to be set up in the Pedrouços district, which will support innovation and entrepreneurship while empowering a national, blue economy ecosystem grounded on a sustainable, technological and decarbonising base.
Located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Tagus River, the city of Oeiras has the largest group of maritime fortifications in the world. Aiming to reposition the city as a beacon for sea-based research and knowledge production, the Municipality of Oeiras wants to turn these fortifications into a new, multinuclear Tagus Museum. In the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, the Oeiras Municipality contributed to the development of an ocean literacy strategy that informs the programme and contents of this future museum, which aims to reconnect local populations with the sea through an awareness of aquatic ecosystems and of maritime heritage and culture.
Located in the heart of the Öresund Region, Malmö University is characterised by its global engagement, community involvement and a multidisciplinary, challenge-based approach to education, research, and collaboration. Malmö University’s participation in the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium involves the School of Arts and Communication, a pioneer in Scandinavian participatory design and a centre of excellence in social and ecological justice, collaboration across sectors, and the politics of design. It also engages Malmö University’s Forum for Social Innovation Sweden, a national knowledge and collaboration platform for social innovation and social enterprise, with regional nodes at five universities from north to southern Sweden. The School of Arts and Communication researchers supported the consortium cities in driving local co-design processes guided by four principles: to be sustainable, inclusive, aesthetic, and locally grounded. In addition, a pilot involving the citizens of Malmö – through several activities based on the participatory structure devised by School of Arts and Communication researchers – was developed in collaboration with the Forum for Social Innovation Sweden and the Malmö Marine Education Center, which aimed to create a new sustainable culture of living “as the sea”, as well as alongside it.
Founded in May 2007, the Marine Education Center in Malmö is dedicated to increasing Ocean Literacy through marine educational activities for schools and the public. The vision of the centre is to influence the conditions for a viable sea by promoting the knowledge, awareness and responsibility of citizens, business and decision makers. This ongoing work is based on two decades of experience, research and close collaboration with the City of Malmö and other partners through local, national and international networking. In the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, the Marine Education Center involved, together with Malmö University and the Forum for Social Innovation Sweden, citizens in the Malmö pilot, which aims to create a new sustainable culture of living “as the sea”, as well as alongside it.
The Deichtorhallen Hamburg are dedicated to contemporary art and photography. With its three buildings – the Hall for Contemporary Art, the House of Photography, and the Falckenberg Collection – at two locations and 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, it is one of the largest exhibition venues of its kind in Europe. The exhibitions at the Deichtorhallen reflect the present moment, transcending boundaries and genres. In interaction with the extraordinary architecture of the three exhibition halls, the institution hosts spectacular, high-quality exhibitions that are often realised in cooperation with international museums. In the context of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg worked on the drops of Regenerative Menu and Ocean Literacy, in the context of the exhibition Survival in the 21st Century. Having taken place at the Hall for Contemporary Art from 20 April to 22 September 2024, this exhibition constituted a collective exploration about the question of how we are going to live together in the future.
The historical port city of Genoa is the biggest city in Italy’s Liguria Region. The Municipality of Genova has defined the Blue and Green Economies, alongside Culture, Tourism and Territorial Animation, as strategic policies and drivers of socio-economic development. In order to support the governance of the city’s Blue Economy, the Municipality launched in November of 2020 the Genova Blue District, a new physical hub created to support Blue Economy-related innovation, research and development. In the context of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, the Comune di Genova developed actions that within an urban regeneration programme aimed to recover an ancient link between the city and the sea, enhance public space, improve accessibility and include new services for the inhabitants of Vernazzola sea village.
As the coordinator of the H2020 MEMEX project, IIT has relevant experience in developing AI technology for social good, in particular targeting communities at risk of exclusion. IIT provided the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium technology to implement digital storytelling tools that are instrumental for the development of the project’s specific drops. It also supported the feasibility study and parameter definition for developing Digital Twins for the protection and monitoring of endangered cultural heritage buildings and monuments in coastal areas.
The City of Venice acts at the local and EU levels to promote the sustainable socio-economic development of the area and its community. Its territory ranges from a large seafront archipelago and a fragile lagoon environment to the historic city islands and the medium-sized city areas of Mestre and Marghera on the mainland. At the European level, the City of Venice promotes initiatives and projects in priority areas in the following fields: environment and local sustainable development, cultural heritage preservation and valorisation, urban regeneration, social inclusion, intercultural dialogue, human rights promotion, innovation and employment. For the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, the Comune di Venezia collaborated with Ca’ Foscari University’s team of experts to finalise the demonstrator pilot action focused on the area of San Basilio and Santa Marta, which intended to recover and redevelop its urban fabric by reconnecting it to the rest of the city and its port, while enhancing its ability to retain and attract new citizens and activities.
Ca’ Foscari is the largest university in Venice. Involved with the most renewed national and international research and technology transfer institutions, it has achieved remarkable international impact across many scientific, technological, economic and humanistic domains. Committed to environmental studies and protection, community well-being, social equity and economic development, Ca’ Foscari brought to the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium its expertise in the creation and management of the demonstrator pilots’ replication strategy, as well as the design of social strategies, environmental awareness and inclusive interaction design.
Università Iuav di Venezia is one of the leading universities in Europe and across the world in the fields of architecture, design, fashion, visual arts, urban and regional planning, and theatre. Established in 1926 as one of the first Architecture Schools in Italy, Iuav combines a renowned tradition with a strong commitment to permanent innovation while putting the design process at the core of the whole educational experience. IUAV contributed to the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium with its expertise in urban planning activities and architectural design.
The North Adriatic Sea Port Authority serves as a dynamic hub of global connectivity, offering unparalleled opportunities for trade and collaboration, and places paramount importance on seamless port management while upholding the highest standards of environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Beyond its role in commerce, the Ports of Venice and Chioggia take immense pride in celebrating the cities’ rich cultural heritage. Driven by a steadfast focus on innovation and sustainability, the Ports of Venice and Chioggia eagerly embrace cutting-edge technologies and prompt eco-friendly practices. The goal is to shape a greener future for the port and its surrounding environment, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with nature. As active participant in the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails initiative, the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority aimed to solidify the Ports of Venice and Chioggia as an unequivocal symbol of maritime excellence, driving forward progress and fostering meaningful collaborations.
Founded in 1842, TUDelft is the oldest, largest and most comprehensive university of technology in The Netherlands. Carola Hein, holder of the UNESCO Chair on Water, Ports and Historic Cities, also chairs the Leiden Delft Erasmus university consortium’s PortCityFutures Centre, a community of researchers from Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam universities interested in the spaces, governance and culture of port-city regions. Ingrid Mulder heads a Delft Design Lab and coordinates DesignScapes (Building Capacity for Design enabled Innovation in Urban Environments), a H2020 European project aimed at building capacity for urban transformations. The PortCityFutures Centre participated in the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium with two leading New European Bauhaus-related Faculties: Architecture and the Built Environment and Industrial Design Engineering.
Nieuwe Instituut is the Netherlands’ national institute for architecture, design and digital culture. Located in Rotterdam, it is home to the Museum of Architecture, Design and Digital Culture and to the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, one of the largest architecture collections in the world. It focuses on important social developments such as the housing shortage, the energy transition, the rise of artificial intelligence and the use of public space. Apart from being the cultural partner in the development of demonstrator pilots, the Nieuwe Instituut contributed to the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails overall programme via the New Academy led by the philosopher Rosi Braidotti, a leader in research on the embodied and embedded perspectives of humans and non-humans.
As a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) – one of several set up in the EU to facilitate cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation between Member States or their regional and local authorities – the Linieland van Waas en Hulst EGTC aims to strengthen the social, ecological and economic cohesion in the border region defined by the Dutch municipality of Hulst and the Belgian municipalities of Beveren, Sint-Gillis-Waas and Stekex ne. It is part of the ambitious Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe Flemish-Dutch partnership around the ‘Drowned Land of Saeftinghe’ nature reserve of Scheldt river estuary. The landscape of this border region is characterised by its wide polders, dikes and creeks, as well as the proximity to the Port of Antwerp. The partnership uses an integrated approach in its contribution to diverse projects dedicated to topics such as climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity or sustainable tourism. In its project development, Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe creates space for inhabitants, farmers and entrepreneurs to experiment, innovate and exchange knowledge, while actively searching for win-win solutions that improve the environment ecologically, economically and socially.
