Bauhaus of the Seas Sails worked across four distinct aquatic ecosystems, each with its own culture and challenges. The enclosed, fragile Venice lagoon, shaped over centuries by an intricate relationship between human settlement and tidal water. The rivers Elbe in Hamburg and Tagus in Lisbon and Oeiras, which flow through dense, diverse cities and carry centuries of industrial, ecological and cultural history. The Ligurian sea, where the historic port city of Genoa is rediscovering its relationship with the water at its edge. The North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, where the Rhein and Scheldt rivers end in a Delta region shared by Belgium and the Netherlands, where land reclaimed from the sea is now reckoning with a future in which the sea may return. The Öresund strait, a natural thoroughfare that has provided Malmö and Copenhagen a connection to the world at the expense of its marine lifeforms. Each ecosystem shaped what was possible, what was needed and what could be learned. What connects them is not a single solution but a shared approach: co-design, more-than-human thinking and the conviction that culture is a serious tool for change.
