Drop, Ripple, Wave

Across seven locations, Bauhaus of the Seas Sails developed and tested eight distinct types of intervention or Drop typologies – each designed to address a specific set of challenges and opportunities in coastal communities. Each typology was built to be replicable: adaptable to different ecosystems, cultures and institutional contexts.

Filmed on location across Europe and produced in collaboration with Canal 180, the Porto-based independent editorial platform dedicated to culture and creativity, the Drop, Ripple, Wave 16-episode series is composed of conversations where consortium members and external experts discuss each of the eight Drop typologies. With episodes dropped every month from April to November in 2024 and 2025, this series aimed to communicate the consortium’s larger aspirations, goals and approaches. More importantly, it aimed to inform and inspire citizens directly involved or impacted by these pilots.

Each drop typology is documented in detail in the project’s toolkits, available in the Resources section.

Multispecies Assemblies

Governance and participation processes that formally include non-human interests alongside human ones. Developed through the Zoöp framework and tested across all seven locations.

Inclusive Digital Storytelling

Participatory processes for collecting and sharing the stories, memories and knowledge embedded in coastal communities, combined with digital tools that make those stories accessible and place-specific. Developed in Genoa.

Ocean Literacy

Educational and cultural programmes that deepen people’s understanding of and connection to aquatic ecosystems – through science, art, food and direct sensory experience. Developed in Oeiras, Malmö and Hamburg.

Blue Seniors

Co-design and digital prototyping processes that centre the experiences and knowledge of older residents and that address the specific challenges of ageing in coastal cities. Developed in Venice.

Blue Makerspace

Hands-on experimentation with sustainable, sea-based materials – biomaterials, circular production techniques, nature-inspired design – as a way of connecting ecological innovation to local cultural heritage. Developed in Lisbon.

Regenerative Menu

Food-based programmes that use local, sustainable and ecologically grounded ingredients and practices to reconnect communities with the ecosystems that feed them. Developed in Lisbon, Venice and Hamburg.

Living with Water

Experiential and educational formats that engage communities in the lived realities of water – flooding, adaptation, risk, resilience – through participatory, embodied and scenario-based methods. Developed in Rotterdam.

Future Tidal Architectures

Design and planning workshops that address the spatial and architectural challenges of living with rising seas, tidal dynamics and climate-induced water uncertainty. Developed in Venice and the Delta.
